The Warwick Historian

“As long as any earl of Warwick lived…England should never be cleansed or purged of civil war and privy sedition; such was the name of Warwick”

Turning Stories into Experiences

“What the HELL is an Interpretation Manager?” – don’t worry, every family member and friend has asked me the same question…endlessly…

Put simply: I turn stories into experiences…

Interpretation is the process of choreographing and layering stories into spaces using historic objects, re-creation, props, graphics, sounds, smells, projections, lighting, and many other techniques to create the feeling of stepping back in time, to emotionally engage with stories and the people of the past.

Think about your visit to a historic site or museum. Think about how you discover the stories, engage with the space and its people. Lighting. Sound. Smells. Graphics. Illustrations. Text. Projections. Furniture. Audio Guides. All of these are part of the process of interpreting a space.

My specialism is historic spaces. There is nothing more challenging, nor more satisfying, than finding ways of evoking the feeling of stepping into a story. Whether its designing a lighting scheme that matches the levels and sources of historic lights, or bringing architecture to life with sounds and smells, reanimating a room or courtyard with furniture and props inspired by historic drawings and made using traditional techniques, or using graphics, projections, authentic wall-hangings, or historic objects to tell a story.

That’s the job, and the endless, exciting, and creative fun that pays the bills. Flick through my portfolio above…
